Fun Facts & History of the Yoga Wheel

🌀

A Modern Invention with Ancient Roots

The modern yoga wheel was first created in 1978 by Sri Dharma Mittra using plexiglass, designed to loosen back muscles and support deeper spinal extension in backbends.

👨‍👦

The Dharma Family Legacy

Dharma Mittra’s son, Dov Vargas (Yogi Varuna), brought the wheel into the mainstream with the Dharma Yoga Wheel brand in the 2010s, offering more accessible designs.

♾️

The Symbol Behind the Shape

The yoga wheel draws from the Dharmachakra — or Wheel of Dharma — symbolizing the cycle of life, energy, and growth. A physical tool with spiritual roots.

👵

Designed for All Bodies

Eva Mittra created a half-wheel variation to offer more support to seniors or those in need of gentler practice. It honors inclusivity and ease in movement.

💫

Why It Feels So Good

Using the wheel helps decompress the spine, open the heart center, and release tension in the shoulders and hips. A mix of support, strength, and surrender.

📈

From Niche Tool to Global Trend

Once a quiet prop in Dharma Yoga, the wheel now appears in studios worldwide — praised for its therapeutic support and playful, accessible approach to deepening practice.
